Save the Penguin Project

Climate change poses a major threat to penguins. Emperor penguins rely on sea ice to form their breeding colonies, avoid predators in the ocean. But as Earth's temperature rises in relation to greenhouse gas and carbon dioxide emissions, sea ice is at risk of disappearing. Since 2016, Antarctica has experienced the four lowest sea ice extents observed in the 45 year satellite record, with the two lowest years in 2021/22 and 2022/23, and it is estimated that as many as 7,000 chicks may have perished (read). Population of Adelie penguin, also one of the most widespread penguin species of Antarctica, have fallen by more than 65% in the past 25 years. This project, a series of watercolor drawings, seeks to raise awareness of such issues by portraying stories of penguins.
